It’s weird to think the photo started out pretty much as a test for the lighting, but something about it made me have a bit of a play in Lightroom, and by the time I’d finished I actually preferred it to the one I originally had in mind. Considering how “blessed” the show seemed to be (a lot of people were moved to tears by the emotion portrayed by the actors and we’ve only heard great things about the performances), maybe there was a little “devine intervention” with the photos too.

These award things seem to be like buses, nothing for ages then they all come at once. After the success in September with the “Stairwell” image (see the previous post), I found out later on that it had been chosen for the site’s Photo of the Week award and then came runner up in the Photo of the Month award to a stunning photo of a Kingfisher.

At the start of October I took some programme & publicity photos for Felling Stage Society for their upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar and one of those struck a chord with the members of Photography Cafe as again, it took a Photo of the Day and then Photo of the Week award.

Strangely enough it came about through a suggestion from Bev rather than me dropping massive hints. Our daughter Caitlin is taking photography as part of her Art GCSE over the next 2 years so Bev thought that instead of getting her a new camera to use, it would make more sense for me to get a new one and pass my 50d down to Caitlin. I wasn’t going to argue lol. I took the new camera out on a wander around Newcastle’s quayside one Sunday afternoon and while checking out some of the exhibits in the Baltic Art Gallery, I thought I’d try out the camera at high ISO to see how it controlled the “noise” that is prevalent in those types of images. The shot here is taken from the 5th floor looking down the stairwell and taken with an ISO of 3200. I was impressed and not just by the fact I managed to get a sharp image handheld with a 1/4 sec shutter speed. There is hardly any noise showing. I posted the shot on the Photography Cafe website over the weekend and was surprised to find that it was voted Photo of the Day. Not bad for a image I took just as a test.

Now we look at actually making the purchase. Let’s assume that you have found a few cameras that you are interested in, or have found the one that is just right for you.

Now you just want to get it at the best price you can.

Do you go retail or internet?

This is a tough question for most people. If you are still wary of buying things on the Internet, it’s especially hard to jump right in.

Here’s something that might help: if you want to get the absolute best price on your camera, buy it from a store operating on the internet.

On very few occasions have I ever found a retail store that offers lower prices than internet stores. Even when the retail store is having a sale, it’s unlikely that they can beat the everyday price offered on the internet. This is not to say that you won’t find a great deal in a retail store. You might get lucky and find a really big sale, then you might get a better price for your new digital camera. But do you really want to wait that long?

However, if the price isn’t an issue for you, here are some of the advantages of buying your digital camera from a retail store.

Pros of Going Retail

Physical Location

God forbid that you should ever have problems with your new camera, but if you did, you have a location that you can return it to. While returning items to internet stores is fairly simple these days, it still involves the extra effort of contacting them to get a returns number, then boxing and shipping your camera back.

I want it NOW!

Don’t want to wait? Need that camera today or tomorrow so you can take it away on your trip? Then retail is going to be your best option. If you use an internet store and choose overnight delivery, the extra cost may put the online price similar to the retail price. Plus, you can have the camera in your hands straight away. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Right now! Many people don’t like to wait, so having a retail store nearby can be the answer.

Try It Out First

I recommend this even if you are going to buy your camera on the internet.

While there is plenty of advice and information about cameras available on the internet, nothing beats actually holding a camera in your hands.

You can feel the weight and see the size. You can see how bright the screen is, and how big the camera is in your hands and if the grip is comfortable. It’s also important to see if the camera controls are well positioned for you. A camera may sound great as it’s described on the internet, but if you can’t figure out how to work it, then you’re not going to be happy with it.

That Human Element

You can talk to a person before you make your final decision. This is important if you still have doubts or questions about a camera. While some staff may not have all the answers, they may be able to provide you with some advice, which you will not get speaking to a sales rep on the phone

Pros of Using The Internet

Price

When I say there is a difference in price, I’m not taking coppers. Depending on the type of camera you are buying, you can end up saving anything between £20-30 up to a couple of hundred by purchasing your camera over the Internet.

Convenience

I don’t know about you, but I love having parcels delivered to my door (though I’m not sure the postie is always too happy about it). No hassle with parking, no fighting with crowds. Just the item that I ordered, being brought to my door.

Selection

This is not so much of an issue if you are buying the latest equipment. You should be able to find the most recent items just about anywhere.

However, you may find that you want some more accessories for your camera: a camera bag, external flash, filters, tripods, or clothing (yeah, you can get special photographic clothing too). These types of accessories can be rather difficult to find in retail stores. They maybe only have one or two examples of a particular kind, if any at all. It’s not worth their while to carry items that are not in constant demand. Not so on the internet.

You may also decide that you want an older camera model, and not the latest and greatest. If this is the case, then it is usually much easier to find last year’s models on the internet than it is in a retail store. Once a camera is no longer the latest one, it will quickly be off the shelf.

I’ve been asked loads of times by friends and work colleagues, “I want a new camera, which one should I get?” They don’t know just how difficult a question that is, as what is right for me, need not necessarily be right for them, or someone else. I always say the best thing you can do is set yourself a budget, go to a camera retailer and get your hands on all the models in your price range. See how each one fits in your hands. Is it too big or small? Too light or too heavy? Do your fingers fall naturally on the controls or will you have to constantly look to see where they are? Then you are in the best position to choose what is right for you.

What I can tell them though, is the kind of things to look for and things to consider. From the cheapest models to the ones used by pros, the choices and features are massive and can be confusing. So how do you choose a model?

What camera for what user?

To choose a camera firstly you need to ask what you (or whoever you are buying for) need to get out of it and what you will use it for. What type of photographer are you? If you have the answer to this question, the choice won’t be difficult. As a matter of fact with a bit of simple advice and by asking yourself the right questions, you will have no trouble deciding on the type of camera that will suit your needs. Start by asking yourself what type of photographer you are.

Beginner

Cheap Point and Shoot Cameras

If you do not know much about photography and you do not want to spend too much, or maybe buying for a child, go for a basic camera. These are ideal for your holiday or family photos. They are easy to use (usually just point and shoot) and these types of cameras should have a built in flash and an LCD screen to view the images on. They should also allow you record small videos.

Intermediate

Compact Digital Cameras

If you are looking for a camera you can carry with you and use wherever you are, then it’s a compact camera you will want to look at. Like the point and shoot cameras, their automatic mode enables you to take pictures in almost any circumstance. A lot of cameras in this range are small enough to fit in your pocket or handbag. The compact cameras are an option if you want progress a bit further. You will find the widest choice in this range. Most of them have a resolution of at least 6-8 megapixels and at least a 3x optical zoom. Most will have advanced functions to give the user some control as well the normal automatic mode. Additional preset modes such as night, sport, outdoor, party or snow snapshot allow the user to take pictures without having to worry about the conditions. They combine ease-of-use with a superior quality camera.

Bridge SLR Cameras:

Bridge SLRs are designed for those who don’t want the bulk and extra weight that comes with multiple lenses, but still want similar facilities to SLRs such as high quality optical zoom, Anti shake technology, full manual control, etc. Bridge cameras offer the user the chance to experience quality similar to an SLR without the price.

Advanced

Digital SLR Cameras

If you enjoy photography as a serious hobby or if you want to be able to control everything the camera does when taking pictures, you will want to look at Digital SLRs. SLRs offer the most flexibility and control over image taking, with a few preset modes alongside semi-automatic or full manual controls. They will also have interchangeable lenses as well as additional accessories such as flashguns, filters, battery packs etc. SLRs are created for informed amateurs or for professionals who want to have complete control over every function on their cameras. The emphasis is on functions and performance. At the higher end of the range you will also find High Definition Video recording capabilities. You’ll find these types of cameras are ideal for real photography lovers.

Things to remember choosing a digital camera

Sensor resolution:

It’s on the sensor where the image is created. The more pixels a sensor has the greater detail will be recorded and the larger an image can be printed. This is what is also known as the camera’s resolution. You can base your resolution requirements around the size of image you want to print. A 5 megapixel camera is more than capable of producing an image which can be printed out at a4 size. However, it shouldn’t be taken that the more pixels a camera has, the better your photos will be. A good photographer will still be able to create a good image from a “lesser” camera but a poor photographer will still take poor photos, no matter how many pixels they use.

The lens:

There are two type of lens, fixed and zoom. A zoom lens has the ability to increase (or decrease) the size of the image being taking, making it appear closer. A fixed lens cannot. Zoom lenses usually vary between 28-210 mm but more expensive versions may go wider or longer. Just to confuse the matter slightly, there are also 2 types of zoom, optical and digital. The one you should really be interested in if you opt for a zoom lens is the optical one. An optical zoom will extend out from the front of the camera body and uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom is an invention of digital video cameras and uses software to make the image larger. However the bigger you make the image using digital zoom the lower the quality gets

Size and weight:

At one end of the scale there are compact cameras weighing as little as 100 grams, and are not much bigger than a credit card and at the other the Digital SLRs that, added together with their lenses, weigh more than a kilo. It will all come down to personal preference in this area.

The screen size:

As well as the viewfinder, virtually all digital cameras have a liquid crystal display (LCD) that allows you to pre-view the picture you are about to take. From one digital camera to another, the size of the colour screen varies and the comparisons aren’t easy. The screen size is usually measured in inches and is from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner. The bigger the screen, the more easily you’ll be able to view the picture you are going to take or view the pictures or the short video you have taken.

Video Capture:

Most non SLR digital cameras now have a video capture facility (this feature is usually not added to all but the latest, high end SRLs), meaning you can create short film sequences. The quality isn’t always very good and some cameras don’t have a sound recorder. But it’s still handy to capture good moments on video.

Single Use Batteries versus rechargeable:

Almost all entry level and some compact cameras use either AAA or AA batteries. The advantage of this is that they are very common, you can buy them anywhere. The downside is they won’t last very long and so rechargeable batteries are a lot more reliable. Although they can be pricey to start with, it’s worth it in the end as replacing traditional batteries ends up being quite expensive. Mid range cameras and SLRs are usually supplied with a specific Lithium-ion rechargeable battery and extra ones can be usually be purchased.

The ease of use:

The one thing never to forget! It’s no good getting a camera only to find it’s too small or too big in your hands. Testing the camera and it’s functions out before buying it can be useful to check if you like it’s look and feel.

Don’t forget a memory card:

A lot of cameras are supplied with a memory card (or a small amount of built in memory) but it’s unlikely you’ll get more than a dozen images taken before it’s full. It’s therefore a good idea to budget for a larger card (at least 1GB) to increase your storage capacity. There are several types (SD Cards, Compact Flash, Memory Stick) so make sure to check which one corresponds to your camera.

Basically this is a look back at the images I’ve produced over 2010 and picked my 10 favourites. For various reasons I didn’t take as many photos last year as I have in the past, so it was maybe a little easier this time around. I haven’t placed the final 10 in any kind of order

I couldn’t help but sit and be amazed by a story I read in the “Sun” today

Britiah taxpayers have paid £1,500 for a foreign painter to exhibit invisible pictures.

“Polish artist Agnieszka Kurant got the Arts Council England grant for a show that included “a painting that hasn’t been painted yet”. Warsaw-based Kurant’s Snow Black exhibition also had “an invisible sculpture” and “a movie shot with no film in the camera”.
Her windfall was among £147,755 given to foreign artists by the Labour government in the year to last April.
Culture Department officials insisted there were “substantial benefits for English artists and audiences”. But Tory MP Matt Hancock condemned it as “a staggering waste”.

The Sun told last week how £29,000 of public cash was spent moving art and other items abroad.”

So, I thought I’d give it a go.

Here is my attempt which I’ve called “Photo Taken Without a Memory Card”

Photo Taken Without A Memory Card

If anyone is interested you can purchase a copy of this unlimited edition directly from myself. I’ll also be approaching the Art Council soon to see if they are interested in letting me have a grant, which may mean that I’ll have to remove the image from general sale so get in quickly if you want a copy.

Depending on how this one is received, I have another 2 images planned, “Really Heavy Blizzard” and “Midnight Underground”

As always, your comments are welcome and encouraged.
